![]() With 2017’s “Unbound,” he returned to a romantic tale in an exotic setting, 16th-century China, even as he took his biggest risk yet: abandoning traditional publishing for self-publishing. While many publishers strictly pigeonhole their authors, Shors clearly wasn’t content to remain on a reservation, even a successful one of his own making, and he soon expanded into contemporary stories that veered away from the romantic setup of his early novels. Even when he moved closer to the present, as in the World War II-set “Beside a Burning Sea” - notice the similarity in titles - he was exploring much the same emotional territory. ![]() Lafayette’s John Shors has taken some interesting chances with his career since publishing his 2004 debut novel, the much-believed and well-reviewed historical romance “Beneath a Marble Sky,” set in and around India’s majestic Taj Mahal.Īt first, he stayed in the groove etched by that early success, publishing novels like “Temple of a Thousand Faces,” another historical romance, this time set at Cambodia’s famous Angkor Wat. ![]()

"Perhaps it is a sign." Lucian Argeneau's voice was surprisingly clear. "I begin to think they are going to be late," Domitian murmured, hefting his duffel bag higher on his shoulder so that the microphone hidden in his sleeve would catch his words. "That'll do, love," he growled and urged his mount to start moving again as he bent to kiss her. Perhaps unusually for an academic, I prefer this film to its source: André Aciman’s 2007 novel. ![]() ![]() It is nominated in three categories: Best Picture, Best Actor (Chalamet), and Best Adapted Screenplay (James Ivory). The film has received rave reviews from critics and the public alike, largely because of the beautifully nuanced performances of its lead actors, Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet, and Luca Guadagnino’s inspired direction. One of the films most hotly tipped for Oscars success this year – and in my opinion most deserving of it – is Call Me By Your Name. ![]() ![]() Everyday objects outside and inside the home begin to emanate something strange. A lot of reviewers have thrown the term “magical realism” around when discussing the story, but for me personally, I think "Stone Animals" is a foray into horror. The women he voiced sounded like cartoon witches from the 70's and (again repeating myself) his NY accent from book 2 was unmistakable for Yogi Bear. At this point with 3 books in the cycle in his pocket, why would he be replaced? For the future ease know his voice is creepy for teen fiction. Footnote: Why do I bother? Will Patton is a fine narrator for adult fiction, but not suited for YA. I will read or listen to whatever this woman writes. Not unhappy I spent my credit and eagerly await the final installment.
